森林火災の勢いが止まらず、9月からこれまでに焼失した面積は1,200万ヘクタールとも報道されており、日本国土の3割近い計算になります。立ち昇る煙は隣国のニュージーランドのみならず、1万キロ以上離れた南米のチリやアルゼンチンでも観測されました。
