[:ja]NASAの地球観測衛星Landsat 8がISSから撮影した南アフリカのパラボラ鉱山です。幅は約2kmあります。
パラボラ鉱山では1965年に銅の採掘が始まり、2年後には露天掘り鉱山として開発が本格化しました。穴の深さは800mにもおよびましたが、資源が枯渇し、露天掘りは2003年に終了、代わりに1996年から坑内掘りが創業しています。露天掘り鉱山は宇宙から確認できる最大級の人工物の一つです。

NASA’s Landsat 8 satellite captured Palabora Mines, South Africa. The open-pit mine has 2km in width.
The mine pictured here has been growing vertically and horizontally near Phalaborwa, South Africa, for more than 50 years. Copper mining began at Palabora in 1965, and the open-pit development became fully operational in just 2 years. The hole reached 800 meters down into the Earth before the depletion of resources made it uneconomical to continue mining in 2003. Operations then moved underground (below the pit) from 1996 and mostly out of sight. Open-pit mines are one of the artifacts recognizable from space.
