ブレストはベラルーシ西部の都市で、ポーランドとの国境近くに位置しています。1941年6月22日、ドイツによるソ連の侵攻に伴い、町はドイツ軍の攻撃を受けましたが、それに対しブレストの要塞は激しく抵抗しました。抵抗は約1ヶ月続き、その抵抗の果敢さからブレストはソ連より「英雄要塞」の称号を受けました。現在ベラルーシでは政情が不安定になっています。8月9日の大統領選で現職のルカシェンコ氏が約80%の得票率で6選を決めましたが、不正があったと訴え、退陣を迫る抗議デモが広がっていました。同氏は8月17日、新憲法を国民投票で採択した後に「憲法に従って権限を引き渡す」と表明し、条件付きで辞任する意向を示唆しました。

Brest is a city in Belarus at the border with Poland, and is a historic site of many cultures. It was the location of important historical events such as the Union of Brest and Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. The Brest Fortress was recognized by the Soviet Union as the Hero Fortress in honor of the defense of Brest Fortress in June 1941, upon the invasion by Germany. Now, Belarus is gripped by mass protests, triggered by an election widely believed to have been rigged in favor of the incumbent, longtime leader Alexander Lukashenko.
