[:ja]トマ・ペスケ宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したギニア共和国の首都コナクリです。
ギニアは旧フランスの植民地の中でも1958年に他の植民地に先駆けて国民投票で独立した国家で、その首都コナクリは同国最大の2百万人を擁する都市であり、大西洋に面した港湾都市です。当初は、ロス諸島の小さな島の一つであったトンボ島に建設された町でしたが、次第に大陸側のカルーム半島(Kaloum Peninsula)へと拡大しました。歴史的には、1904年、コナクリはフランス領ギニアの首都となり、カンカンに至る鉄道が整備されて内陸部からピーナッツの大量輸送が行われるようになり、貿易港として繁栄しました。現在、町はコナクリ港を中心に発展し、ボーキサイトの輸出以外にも、食品、セメント、金属、燃料などが産業として大きなものとなっています。

Astronaut Thomas Pesquet captured from ISS Conakry, the capital of Guinea.
Conakry with about 2 million population is the capital and largest city of Guinea. A port city, it serves as the economic, financial and cultural centre of Guinea. Originally situated on Tombo Island, one of the Îles de Los, it has since spread up the neighboring Kaloum Peninsula. The city’s economy revolves largely around the port, which has modern facilities for handling and storing cargo, through which alumina and bananas are shipped. Manufactures include food products and cement, metal manufactures, and fuel products. Conakry features a tropical monsoon climate, with a wet season (May-Nov.) and a dry season (Dec.-Apr.).
