[:ja]NASAの地球観測衛星NOAA-20が撮影したチャドの砂嵐の様子です。中央の砂嵐に加えて、画像中央下部にはチャド湖と首都ンジャメナが写っています。
チャドはアフリカ大陸中央部に位置する内陸国で、国名の由来は、アフリカ大陸中央部の湖のチャド湖（チャドは現地語で「大きな水域」という意味）にちなんでいます。国土の大部分をチャド盆地が占めており、特に中部は平坦な地形をしていますが、北部にはティベスティ山地があり、ここの楯状火山のエミクーシ山（標高3445m）が最高標高地点です。画像からもわかりますが、気候区分はほぼ緯度と対応しており、一般に北へ行くほど乾燥が酷くなります。国土の北半分は年間降水量が200mmに達しない砂漠気候（BW)であり、わずかなオアシスを除き植生はほとんど存在せず、広大なサハラ砂漠が広がっています。中部は年間降水量が200~600mm程度のステップ気候（BS)、南部は降水量が600~1500mm程度のサバナ気候（Aw)であり、湿潤草原と灌木からなるサバナが広がります。チャド北部は乾燥地域であり、農業は中部および南部に限られています。農耕可能限界に近いサヘル地帯においては、乾燥に強いトウジンビエが主に栽培され、農耕よりも牧畜が中心となっており、チャド湖周辺においては氾濫原を利用した集約的なトウモロコシ栽培が盛んです。

NASA’s NOAA-20 satellite captured the dust storm over Chad. Lake Chad and the capital N’Djamena are also captured at the lower middle of the image. In addition to the dust in the center, Lake Chad and capital city N’Djamena are captured at the lower middle of the image.
Chad is a landlocked country at the crossroads of north-central Africa. It has a population of 16 million, of which 1.6 million live in the capital and largest city N’Djamena. Chad has several regions: a desert zone in the north, an arid Sahelian belt in the center and a more fertile Sudanian Savanna zone in the south. Lake Chad, after which the country is named, is the second-largest wetland in Africa. Chad’s official languages are Arabic and French. It is home to over 200 different ethnic and linguistic groups. Islam (51.8%) and Christianity (44.1%) are the main religions practiced in Chad. In 2020, approximately 80% of Chad’s labor force was employed in the agricultural sector which accounts for 52.3% of the GDP, as of 2017. With the exception of cotton production, some small-scale sugar cane production, and a portion of the peanut crop, Chad’s agriculture consisted of subsistence food production.
