[:ja]マティアス・マウラ―宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したモンゴルの首都ウランバートルです。
ウランバートルはトーラ川沿岸の標高約1,300mの場所に位置し、人口は約140万人と、人口300万人のモンゴルの約半数がこの都市に住むという極端な一極集中となっています。画像からもわかりますが、同市は四方を山に囲まれている盆地で、冬場、暖房用の石炭使用により、北京を上回るPM2.5濃度の大気汚染が指摘されています。

Astronaut Matthias Maurer captured from ISS Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia.
Ulaanbaatar lies at an elevation of 1,300m in a valley on the Tuul River. It is the country’s cultural, industrial and financial heart, the center of Mongolia’s road network and connected by rail to both the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia and the Chinese railway system. The city has 1.3 million population which accounts for almost half of the entire population of the country. The city is surrounded by moutains and during winter air pollution caused by coal stoves from the city’s ger districts gets trapped and exerts PM2.5 concentration that exceed that of Beijing, China.
