キプロスというと地中海のイメージがありますが、実は最東端はシリアから100km程度西方、トルコの約100km南方と、地理的には中東に非常に近いです。キプロス島では1955年から紛争が継続しており、事実上のギリシャとトルコの代理戦争になっています。1974年以来、南北に分断されており、島の北部約37%を北キプロス・トルコ共和国（トルコのみが独立国家として承認）が、南部をキプロス共和国（192か国（トルコを除く）が国家承認）が占めています。

Cyprus evokes the image of Mediterranean Sea but its geographical proximity to the Middle East is prominent. In Cyprus Island, political conflict between Greece and Turkey has continued to this day. Since 1974, the island is separated into two nations, the north as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (recognized by Turkey) and the south as the Republic of Cyprus (recognized by 192 nations except Turkey).
