[:ja]セルゲイ・コルサコフ宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したブラジルのリオデジャネイロです。

9月7日はブラジルの独立記念日でした。ナポレオン戦争により、1807年にフランス軍がポルトガルに侵攻し、ポルトガル宮廷はリスボンからリオデジャネイロに遷都し、以降、リオの開発が進みました。1820年ポルトガルを自由主義的な立憲君主制国家に変革しようとする革命が起こり、リオデジャネイロのジョアン6世に帰国を要請し、1821年にポルトガル宮廷はリスボンに帰還しました。一方、摂政として残留したブラガンサ家の王太子ペドロがジョゼ・ボニファシオに代表されるブラジル人ブルジョワジー勢力に支持され、1822年2月18日にブラジル独立戦争が勃発、1822年9月7日に「イピランガの叫び」（葡: Grito do Ipiranga）と呼ばれる独立宣言が行われ、ペドロが初代皇帝ペドロ1世（在位1823年 – 1831年）として即位し、ブラジル帝国はポルトガルから独立しました。

Sept. 7 was the Independence Day of Brazil. The Independence of Brazil comprised a series of political and military events that led to the independence of the Kingdom of Brazil from the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves as the Brazilian Empire. Most of the events occurred in Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo between 1821–1824. Tensions between Portuguese and Brazilians increased and the Portuguese Cortes, guided by the new political regime imposed by the Liberal Revolution, tried to re-establish Brazil as a colony. The Brazilians refused to yield, and Prince Pedro decided to stand with them, declaring the country’s independence from Portugal on Sept. 7 1822. A month later, Prince Pedro was declared the first Emperor of Brazil, with the royal title of Dom Pedro I, resulting in the founding of the Empire of Brazil. (Credit: Sergey Korsakov, Roscosmos)
