[:ja]トマ・ペスケ宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影した米国のラスベガスです。
ラスベガスはアメリカ東海岸ニュージャージー州アトランティックシティと並んで、カジノなどのギャンブルで有名です。1840年代末からのゴールドラッシュが去った頃、1929年の株式大暴落に端を発した大恐慌が起り、さしたる産業のないネバダ州では、税収確保のため1931年に賭博を合法化しました。その後、第二次世界大戦終結後の1946年に、ベンジャミン・シーゲル（バグジー）がフラミンゴホテルを建設し、カジノが収益を上げることが判ると、マフィアが続々とホテルを建設するようになり、それらのホテルは同時に集客のためにフランク・シナトラやサミー・デイヴィスJr.、リベラーチェなどのショーを定期的に行うようになりました。1960年代後半頃から当局の取締りが厳しくなるにつれ、マフィアは次々とホテルの経営権を手放すようになり、合法的な不動産会社やホテルチェーン、ハワード・ヒューズのような大富豪などがこれらのホテルやカジノの経営権を引き継いだとされています。

Astronaut Thomas Pesquet captured from ISS Las Vegas, U.S.
Las Vegas bills itself as The Entertainment Capital of the World, and is famous for its mega casino-hotels and associated activities. Las Vegas was founded as a city in 1905, when 45ha of land adjacent to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks were auctioned in what would become the downtown area. 1931 was a pivotal year for Las Vegas when Nevada legalized casino gambling and reduced residency requirements for divorce to six weeks.
