[:ja]トマ・ペスケ宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影した圧巻のピンク色のオーロラです。オーロラカーテンの主成分は緑色で、これは酸素原子の発光によるものです。スペクトル観測によって、窒素分子の放つ赤色のオーロラと窒素分子イオンが放つ青色のオーロラが混ざることによってピンク色に見えることが判明しています。

[Earthview Wonders] No.1653: Pinkish Aurora

Astronaut Thomas Pesquet captured from ISS amazing pink colored aurora. Green is the most common color seen from the ground and is produced when charged particles collide with oxygen molecules at altitudes of 100-300km. Occasionally, the lower edge of an aurora will have a pink or dark red fringe, which is produced by nitrogen molecules at altitudes of around 100km. Higher in the atmosphere at altitudes of 300-400km, collisions with oxygen atoms produce red auroras. (Credit: Thomas Pesquet, ESA, NASA)
