サンティアゴ・デ・チレは、チリの首都で、中央部の盆地に位置しています。1541年2月12日にスペイン人の征服者ペドロ・デ・バルディビアによりサンティアゴ・デ・ヌエバ・エクストレマドゥーラ (Santiago de Nueva Extremadura) 市として建設されました。サンティアゴは地中海性気候で、夏（10月～3月）は比較的暖かく乾燥し、最高気温が35度まで上がる日もあります。冬（6月～8月）は湿度が高く、普段は最高気温は15度くらいですが、低い日は0度近くまで下がります。降水は冬季に集中し、サンティアゴ市内でも雪が降ることもあり、周辺の山々は豊富な積雪量を誇る南半球最大のスキーリゾートとなっています。盆地に位置するためスモッグや大気汚染がひどく、冬の数ヶ月間はサンティアゴに溜まることがあります。

Astronaut Thomas Marshburn captured from ISS Santiago, the capital of Chile.
The Santiago Metropolitan Region has 8 million residents which is nearly 40% of the country’s population. Most of the city lies between 500–650 m above mean sea level. Founded in 1541 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, Santiago has been the capital city of Chile since colonial times. Santiago’s cityscape is shaped by several stand-alone hills and the fast-flowing Mapocho River, lined by parks such as Parque Forestal and Balmaceda Park. The Andes Mountains can be seen from most points in the city. These mountains contribute to a considerable smog problem, particularly during winter, due to the lack of rain. The city outskirts are surrounded by vineyards and Santiago is within an hour of both the mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
