2023年2月14日、ニュージーランド政府はサイクロン「ガブリエル」による洪水や土砂崩れなどの被害が拡大している現状を踏まえ、国家非常事態宣言を発令しました。最大都市オークランドのある北島で被害が大きく、停電も起きて多くの住民が避難しており、数名が亡くなったと報じられています。ニュージーランドでの国家非常事態宣言は、2011年のクライストチャーチ地震、2020年の新型コロナウイルス感染拡大に続き史上3度目です。

NASA’s Suomi NPP satellite captured the Cyclone Gabrielle landfall in New Zealand.
The Cyclone Gabrielle hit New Zealand on Feb. 12, 2023 on the uppermost region of the North Island, before tracking down the east coast, causing widespread devastation including 9 death tolls. New Zealand announced a national state of emergency on Tuesday, which allows it to streamline its response to the disaster. The country has only previously declared a national state of emergency on the Covid-19 pandemic and the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. New Zealand’s climate minister has attributed the scale of the disaster to climate change.
