Spain’s first major wildfire of 2023 comes early in the midst of widespread drought. Almost 4,000ha have burned since the end of March on the border between Valencia and Aragon, which is facing a combination of a severe lack of rainfall, unseasonably high temperatures and strong winds. In Spain, fires typically become severe in June as summer heat arrives. But in 2023, the fire season got off to an early start with an intense blaze that raged in the eastern Castellon province in late March. (Credit: NASA)
