The history of Bangkok dates back to the early 15th century, when it was a village on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, under the rule of Ayutthaya. In 1782, King Rama I succeeded Taksin, moved the capital to the eastern bank’s Rattanakosin Island, thus founding the Rattanakosin Kingdom. Bangkok’s rapid growth with little urban planning and regulation has resulted in a haphazard cityscape, inadequate infrastructure systems and severe air pollution in 1990’s. In recent years the city has since turned to public transport in an attempt to solve these major issues.
