Barcelona with 600,000 population is the capital city of Catalonia Autonomous Community and second most populous municipality of Spain. In the satellite image, many squares are noticeable. This was part of the 19th-century “extension” of Barcelona called the Eixample by progressive Catalan Spanish urban planner Ildefons Cerdà. The Eixample is characterized by long straight streets, a strict grid pattern crossed by wide avenues, and square blocks with chamfered corners. The medieval city walls around Barcelona’s old town were torn down.
