Landsat 8 satellite captured the cold snap in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.

In late January 2025, Chicago experienced an intense cold snap with temperatures dropping to -26C and little initial snow. The cold spell ended with multiple snowfalls covering the city in white, while ice spread across Lake Michigan, affecting around 20% of the lake’s surface, in line with historical averages. Offshore winds pushed ice away from the shore, forming a patchwork of thin and thick ice.
The local scenery on the ground is as follows.
