According to Spain’s meteorological agency, Spain received 28% less rain than expected by mid-May 2023 since Oct. 2022. The drought dried up reservoirs, parched olive groves, and led to water restrictions across the country. Drought is so severe in parts of Spain that thousands of people are invoking the heavens desperate for rain. On May 1, parishioners in the southern city of Jaen held a procession carrying aloft a statute of Christ called “El Abuelo” to pray for rain for the first time since 1949.

The local scenery on the ground is as follows.
