Astronaut William Anders captured the “Earthrise” from Apollo 8 in 1968. “Earthrise” photograph from lunar orbit captured humanity’s humble place in the cosmos, punctuating the 1960s’ race to the moon with one of the most recognized images of the 20th century. Anders was killed on June 7, 2024 when the plane he was piloting alone crashed into waters near the San Juan Islands in Washington State. R.I.P.
