In August 2025, astronaut Takuya Onishi, the commander aboard the International Space Station (ISS), posted a poignant message on the eve of his return to Earth: “Earth… everything feels so nostalgic.” His words echoed a legendary line spoken fifty years ago by Captain Juzo Okita, the original commander of the iconic space battleship in the classic anime Space Battleship Yamato, as he completed a long and perilous journey back to Earth. Upon reaching the distant planet Iscandar, Captain Okita expressed heartfelt gratitude and praise to his crew. Though he received the radiation removal device that would save Earth, he remained confined to his sickbed throughout the return voyage. As the ship neared Earth, he gazed at a photo of his family with tears in his eyes. Looking out from the captain’s quarters at the blue planet below, he uttered his final words: “Earth… everything feels so nostalgic,” before quietly passing away.
