Known to the ancient Greeks and Romans as Massalia 600B.C., Marseille has been one of the most important trading centers in the region and the main commercial port of the country for more than 2000 years. Marseille has its own unique culture and is proud of its differences from the rest of France. Today it is a regional center for culture and entertainment with an important opera house, historical and maritime museums, five art galleries and numerous cinemas, clubs, bars and restaurants. The city was selected as the European Capital of Culture in 2013.

The local scenery on the ground is as follows.
