Wakasa Bay (Wakasa-wan) is a bay located in the Chūbu region of Japan, and spans the coasts of Kyoto Prefecture, and Fukui Prefecture. The bay contains numerous smaller inlets, including well-known sightseeing spots such as Amanohashidate, one of Japan’s Three Scenic View. Since ancient times, Wakasa Bay has been abundant in marine products, and a variety of biological remains have been discovered at the Torihama Shell Mound. Additionally, the scattered ports in the bay have long been regarded as excellent harbors. Due to their proximity to Kyoto, they have been famous landing sites for seafood such as mackerel. Furthermore, the cultivation of blowfish (Wakasa fugu) is actively practiced in the region.
